PD Ports, the North East UK port operator, has been short-listed in the global “Port Operator of the Year” category in the Lloyd’s List 2010 Maritime Awards.
PD Ports – the UK’s fourth largest port – was nominated for “maintaining the highest standards of business development and customer satisfaction in this most demanding of years.” Among the other finalists is the Port of Antwerp.
Despite the difficult trading conditions, PD Ports saw a 62 per cent growth in the first quarter of 2010 – compared with the same period last year – at its container terminals at Teesport on the North East coast. This recent growth in container volumes at Teesport coincides with the highly successful portcentric logistics strategy adopted by the port in recent years. The success of portcentric logistics at Teesport has attracted leading retailers Asda and Tesco, as well as Taylors of Harrogate.
PD Ports has now launched an expansion programme at Teesport that will attract another 250 jobs to Teesside. Its CEO David Robinson said: “The Lloyd’s List awards nomination is fantastic news and validates all our efforts to out-perform the market-place in what is still a turbulent period in the global shipping sector.”
Lloyd’s List which was founded in London in 1734 is one of the world’s oldest and most respected maritime publications. Published daily, the seagoing journal specialises in marine insurance, offshore energy, logistics, global trade and law.
PD Ports has also has been shortlisted in the Supply Chain Partnership category of the highly prestigious annual IFW awards. IFW is the leading website for the freight and logistics industry. The award will be presented at London’s Park Lane Hilton on 28 October.
